Great Success at the Bachelor Gives Back Blood Drive

Wow, do I feel awful. Here I thought I was doing a great thing by showing up to “support” a blood drive but I was wrong.  The people that showed up to “donate” are the real people doing great things. I was amazed at how many selfless people woke up early on Saturday morning, on their day off, to donate blood and/or platelets.  Just being around those people made me feel like I was a better person. It was an amazing experience to see how excited they were to help people in need. One pint of blood has the possibility to help three people.  And here I was thinking I am doing a great deed by just showing up and wearing my bachelor shirt. I would even bet to say that most of the people that came out on Saturday to support the American Red Cross were there to donate blood because they wanted to; not because a few Bachelor or Bachelorettes were there.
Take Steve W for example. Steve is a young 20-something guy that comes to the Philadelphia America Red Cross Center every two months to donate his type 0 blood. On this day, he was a rock star and donated a double pint. For those of you that have never donated it is fairly simple and only takes about 20-40 minutes depending how much you donate. For most people donating is not the worst. As long as you eat and drink plenty of water before and drink lots of water and eat something after you should be fine. Then make sure you do not drink caffeine, work out or drink alcohol for the day and you should be good to go. Since it was Steve’s first time doubling up, he chose to have someone pick him up instead of walking the few blocks home. He was just one of many wonderful people I have meet and have become inspired by.
Then there were Lindsey and Hayley that drove an hour and a half from Harrisburg. Even if these girls may have come to the blood drive because “we” were there, Lindsey donated and seemed to be a pro at it. She is an unique girl and I am so happy to have met her. Her spirit and zest for life is inspiring.
Another group of friends that stopped in to check us out and all three donating blood. Thank you Jill, Erin and John!  I appreciate you all for spending your morning with us. You made us laugh and I am glad you came out to support the Bachelor and the American Red Cross.
Even though I did not donate myself, which let me say I have in the past and unfortunately I passed out so this time I was scared to donate. Basically I chickened out and used the excuse that I had to drive home back to New Jersey an hour and 20 minutes. Let me now tell you because of this event and meeting all of these amazing selfless people I WILL not chicken out next time. I WILL donate at the New York Rangers Blood Drive in March in NJ. I promise to be a better person and will make it a point to donate as often as I can.
It only takes 30 minutes out of your day to donate and save 3 people’s lives. So please donate. Please visit your local American Red Cross Center or www.redcrossblood.org for more information.
